Why By Your Side

Everyone should have the opportunity to reach their potential. I have been teaching children and adults for many years and have discovered that everyone is capable of expanding their minds and obtaining clarity of their world.

By Your Side Tutoring specializes in teaching skills to improve students reading and math. Our ratio is one teacher-to one student. I offer a free assessment and discussion on the results. I create a plan that is specifically designed for the needs of the student. I also take the time to explain the assessment; the academic plan; and how many sessions to expect for success.

We also have developed sessions for homework support. These sessions assist with homeschool programs or in-school curriculum. We have the ability to work with students with their online lessons, too. We cover all subject areas and all grade levels for homework support.

Mathematics

Math: Many students struggle with math. I have learned that they have to know the basics in order to be successful as they journey to the next mathematical concepts. My math tutoring focuses on mastering computation and understanding their level of arithmetic and moving them on to the next concepts. I accomplish most of the math instruction with paper and pencil.

Students and I work the problems out together and then reach the goal of independence. It is very sequential and methodical. By Your Side Tutoring has the expertise to instruct kindergarten through high school math students. Most of my math students exceed their grade level in testing. The sessions for math are 60 minutes.

Math and reading are the main focus, but By Your Side Tutoring also offers assistance with all subject areas such as geography, history, and science. These topics I assess differently and we can discuss the process through email or phone.

Reading

I have a master degree as a reading specialist and have successfully taught many children and adults how to read. I have developed a curriculum that helps children with dyslexia and other reading challenges. Each child is unique. I have learned, through detailed assessment and monitoring, how to best help them understand reading and to become a reader.

I focus on fluency; vocabulary; comprehension; and phonics. I also place emphasis on the story. I strive to connect students with books they find interesting. I have witnessed several children become readers because they loved the story and wanted to read another selection. It is wonderful. The sessions for reading are 60-90 minutes.

Reading Projects: I have several hands-on projects that accompany books. Students read a selection and then complete a structure that is related to the story. This has been a very engaging way for children to become interested in books or a genre.
